Genre Conventions - Alternative/Indie

Image
My song is in the Alternative/Indie genre so here are some examples of music videos of the same genre, followed by a list of conventions that 'should' appear in my video. "Feel it Still" fits the same genre and includes a rather abstract dance routine, what can be argued to be a narrative but it is rather unclear, as well as a singing performance. Another video of the same genre is "pumped up kicks" this is a mostly performance piece with snip-its of camera footage from days out with friends. Finally there is the music video for the song I am using "Stay Happy". This is a mix between performance and narrative.  Conventions: Singing/performance to camera Aspects of a potential narrative

My Audience

Image
Having researched possible audience types. I believe my target audience would be of an 'alternative' nature. Evidence of this research is shown below.

Story Board

Image
Story Board Illustrates the initial idea of what my video will involve. Scenes including waking up crying, crying in the shower, changing multiple times just to feel comfortable and acceptable, taking copious amounts of medication to feel ok and fit in.

My Artist's Lore

John Doe is a 27 year old northampton-born singer/song-writer. His music and songs have won the hearts of Gen Z the world over. With tracks like 'Demons', 'My Version of Events' and 'Karma's a b***h'. Influenced by his abuse filled childhood, the tracks have caused thousands of more people to com forward in the fight against mental illnesses and the stigma behind it. Viewed as a 'modern revolutionary', especially when it comes to combating mental health awareness. Script for Vids: 1 - Hey guys, just wrapped up production on the new album, coming your way soon, keep an eye out. Later guys 2 - hey everyone, new music video coming up for ______, its personally my favourite so far, go show it some love.  3 - hey all, just on the set of ______, looking really good and on schedule, talk soon.

My Song Choice - Stay Happy (male version)

Image
Stay Happy (male version) - original by Au/Ra Tears appear like diamonds.  Those with mental illnesses often believe this is how it'll be forever Fake plants reference fake smiles Overthinking is always a common issue, especially in those with m.i's Looking for the easiest way to be happy and how to keep it that way, some people turn to coping mechanisms. Alcohol, meds, drugs etc. Not knowing who you are/meant to be This song is my protest song as it is a song that I personally enjoy, and it focuses on my choice of topic of mental health. With it being about someone trying to 'stay happy' and them questioning how to. I may use some aspects of the video as inspiration but that has yet to be decided.

My Survey/Research results

Image
My responses fell within my target audience, therefore the responses represent those of the age group my music video is targeted at.  The genre that appears most popular given the responses, coincides with the song choices that I'm considering. That being a pop-sounding song A majority of responses claimed to have a subscription to Netflix, this means that given my topic of Mental Health awareness, I will be able to pay homage to a popular and recognisable show on Netflix called '13 Reasons Why', which is a show primarily focused on mental health and the impacts it can have if left unchecked. Which links also to how many responses regarding mental health as a topic people are aware of. The political affiliation of my responses indicate that they are unhappy with the current governing body and this could link to the cutting of funds towards helping those struggling with mental illnesses.  Using these statistics it is fair to say that I can continue with my initial ideas.
